In honor of moving into the Preston Apartments (hopefully in the next few hours if the weather gets better), I'm taking a break from packing and cleaning to do a little Broadway musical meme. Why musicals? My new landlord is a sweet old dame who spent her peak years pounding 42nd Street, and is now managing an apartment building and being a hag to the geriatric fags. So, onward!

I promised to update once things settled down... but really, that's hardly going to happen in the next few months. So, hi LJ! What's new?
In May, I graduated from MICA and got to see a majority of my family (a rare event, given how large my family is), and two days after getting my diploma I started working here full-time. The commute down to D.C. takes a while, so some days I am literally in the office longer than I am in my apartment... which I'm trying to move out of. In the meantime, I've gotten the chance to do some great work (like this and this), and am very excited about a lot of projects that I'm in the midst of completing. Sure, that means I have to pull 12 hour days and juggle 11 active jobs at once, but actually everyone in the office is equally swamped with that much work. Maybe this new girl we have coming in next Tuesday will help alleviate the workload after she gets acclimated.
Till then, time to get some last minute work out of the way before eating dinner and going to bed. |

Oh. Hello LJ, it's been a month or so!
Life has become hectic as of late. In the past month, I have:- Gotten an amazing gig with Design Army, a group of amazing designers who like to kick my ass, but in a friendly, helpful-crit way.
- Sliced open my thumb in said army with an Xacto blade, was rushed to the hospital to get stitches (my first time getting sewn up since I was a newborn), and am now impatiently waiting for this slight infection to heal so my thumb can be 100% again.
- Managed to get a date with the doctor at the emergency room (that was staffed by the hottest residents this side of Grey's Anatomy)...
- ... and was promptly stood up.
- Saw a movie in a real movie theatre for the first time since coming back to Baltimore.
- Was invited to attend the Art Directors Club's National Portfolio Day (one of 200 throughout the entire nation).
- Threw myself head-long into the Biodiesel University project while getting very disillusioned.
- Made two artists books (proper editions, even!) in the span of a month, with another soon to be finished.
- Learned how to navigate Penn Station to get on a train with minutes to spare.

Deleted a long, rambling post full of self-loathing and navel-gazing, because I came to this realization:
I came into this business to make something beautiful, and as long as I keep making beautiful things, I shouldn't worry about how I stand up to the rest of the graphic design world.
I may not be as good as some of my friends out there, but I'll be damned if I let jealousy get in the way of my productivity.
Also, as much as I love my friends, some of the really can't design. |

My first day at my new internship... and I spent it looking at the crotches of ballet dancers. No joke. |

Leave it to me to once again find a TV series that I really enjoy... only to realize that it's been cancelled for some time. In this case, it was a show that I disliked on principle. Back in 2002, FOX announced that they were cancelling Dark Angel in favor of a new Joss Whedon series. I loved the first season of Dark Angel, but after September 11th, the second season was forced to rewrite the show's mythology, and the government no longer remained the series' primary antagonist.
Enter Firefly, a scifi western from the creator of Buffy, and one of the reasons why Dark Angel was cancelled. Firefly required a large budget, and FOX didn't feel the need to have two scifi shows in their line up. So, Dark Angel got axed, Firefly came on air, and I didn't bat an eyelash when Firefly went off air after half a season.
But now, after getting hooked from watching Serenity... then Firefly... I'm sad that it didn't get at least a full first season. Oh well, at least Adam Baldwin is in Chuck now. Rrowr. |

Instead of doing some much needed work on projects at the moment... I'm doing some research on the evolution of the American TV network logo. Shiny. |
